A surrealist, retail thriller-comedy following a mistreated mattress store employee and his bitter, demeaning boss on their final night in business. Their last-ever close is disturbed when a strange, unconscious man mysteriously appears inside their lobby.
It’s Burke’s Mattress Palace’s last night in business following the pending divorce of storeowner Mr. Lewis Burke. After a one-sided, foul-mouthed dispute between Burke and his young employee, Wesley, the two discover a strange man fast asleep on a mattress display. Wesley is troubled, believing the man, who can’t be woken up, needs immediate medical attention, while Burke is cold and dismissive. When the mysterious man suddenly vanishes, Burke and Wesley go on a wild goose chase in hopes of finding him before close. Seeing his boss is distressed, Wesley attempts to console him. Burke refuses to open up, and the two spiral into a much-anticipated argument about rights and wrongs. Their quarrel is interrupted upon the mattress man revealing himself, watching them from afar. Burke and Wesley see something we, the audience, do not see, and Wesley experiences a revelation. Burke tries to fire him, but he quits on his account, leaving Burke alone in his own personal retail hell.
