BENEATH THE UNDERCURRENT is a psychological thriller set in the present day English countryside and explores the themes of mental illness, grief, and loss.
Having stopped taking her Bipolar medication, Vivian (“Viv”) Stewart, a famous writer, decides to kill off the main character of her newest novel; however, when an angry Kathryn comes to life, she aims to drive Viv to suicide as a way of seeking revenge, because if Kathryn goes down, she’s taking Viv with her.
SYNOPSIS
When famous author VIVIAN (“VIV”) STEWART has difficulty ending her newest mystery novel, she decides to kill off the main character; however, an angry KATHRYN comes to life and tries to drive Viv to suicide. Knowing Viv’s deepest, darkest secrets, Kathryn uses the writer’s past against her.
Struggling with guilt and grief, Viv slides further and further away from reality. As Viv spirals into darkness, her sister VANESSA (“NESSA”) STEWART arrives in order to assist in preparing the house for Viv’s 45th birthday with the help of a nurse (SARAI) and medical student (ALFONSO), both of whom are there to not only cook, but keep an eye on Viv.
The party’s atmosphere grows more tense once Viv’s friends arrive, which includes her best friend OSCAR; her publisher and ex-lover JULIAN, who surprisingly brings his newest protege, FAYE; and the
sudden surprise arrival of Viv’s younger lover, AARON.
With Kathryn’s constant picking away at her psyche, Viv’s behaviour becomes more erratic as she struggles to keep her darkest secrets hidden. NESSA soon realises that Viv has stopped taking her BiPolar medication, leading to auditory and visual hallucinations; however, not everything is in her head. Unknown to them, the ghost of Viv and Nessa’s six-year-old sister VIRGINIA (“GINNIE”)
STEWART haunts the old family home.
As Ginnie tries to protect Viv from her personal demons, Kathryn remains focused on destroying Viv. Will Kathryn win or will Viv finally find peace?
