Named by Hollywood Digest in 2023 on the list of “Directors to Watch”, Claire Chubbuck is an award-winning director, renowned for creating actor-forward films that focus on truth. She works with actors to use the traumatic events in their lives to create art, both as a director using her process of Cathartic Realism, and as a teacher at the Ivana Chubbuck Studio, where she also serves as the Vice President. Cathartic Realism is an actor-focused filmmaking process where individuals turn their personal traumas into authentic stories. The actor, as both writer and performer, tells their story of shame, guided through a psychiatrist-led process aimed at finding catharsis. By blending therapeutic techniques with the Chubbuck Technique, Cathartic Realism encourages both creators and audiences to confront and embrace their experiences, fostering a shared journey of empathy and understanding. Because her process of Cathartic Realism provides an experience that allows the audience to witness the authentic transmutation of actual traumas and shame, Claire's directorial work has been recognized with numerous awards, and she continues to be an influential figure in the film industry. Her commitment to authentic storytelling and the development of actors has made her an invaluable mentor to many. In addition to ongoing work at the Los Angeles Chubbuck Studio, Claire teaches master level workshops internationally. Claire's extensive knowledge of the Chubbuck technique and her background in production make her an exceptional creator of learning environments. A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Claire began her career as a programming executive at AMC Networks. Her tenure there coincided with the network's rise to prominence with critically acclaimed shows such as Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Killing, and The Walking Dead. Subsequently, she worked as an executive at Participant Media, where she played a vital role in launching the PIVOT broadcast network. Claire's passion for producing has led her to create a diverse range of content, including festival-winning feature-length documentaries and internationally broadcasted short-form content for organizations such as ACLU, Oxfam, Stand Up 2 Cancer, SundanceTV, AMC Networks, and many others.
She is the creator of the cutting edge and globally adopted CHUBBUCK TECHNIQUE. Ivana Chubbuck was honored by The Russian International Film Festival (she is of Russian decent) with a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the film industry alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, William Friedkin, and Francis Ford Coppola.
